The Journey of Creative Hub Africa with SLEPD
Entrepreneurship stands as the foundation for flourishing economies globally, and Sierra Leone’s female pioneers are driving the momentum forward. Isatu Harrison, the CEO and founder of Creative Hub Africa (CHA) has charted a remarkable journey, defying stereotypes and reshaping the narrative of female entrepreneurship in the Salone.
Isatu’s story is one of resilience and determination, a testament to the transformative power of strong belief in one’s vision. Upon her arrival in Sierra Leone, she found herself navigating the rugged terrain of the male-dominated manufacturing industry. Despite the challenges and cultural barriers, she forged ahead, establishing a thriving textile manufacturing company that provided employment opportunities for over 120 individuals.
The path to success took an unexpected turn when Isatu discovered the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP). Recognizing the untapped potential within the creative industry, she envisioned a platform that would empower aspiring entrepreneurs and foster innovation. Undeterred by scepticism and naysayers, she seized the opportunity and applied for SLEDP, defying the odds to pursue her vision.
The initial connection between CHA and SLEDP occurred when she applied for the Emerging Business Development Service Provider program. At that time, she had a training space, although she lacked formal training as a BDS Service Provider and required upgrades to her physical premises. Upon successful application for the Emerging Business Service Provider Support, she entered the program and received technical assistance from Co-creation Hub. Through comprehensive training sessions, she was equipped with the skills necessary to operate as a BDS Service Provider and organize ecosystem events. Additionally, she received a grant to enhance her existing hub. It was this invaluable support that enabled the establishment of CHA in its present form.
With the support of the World Bank and SLEDP, Creative Hub Africa underwent a metamorphosis, evolving into the first-ever creative space in Sierra Leone. Armed with fiber internet, business consultants, co-working desks, and state-of-the-art amenities, CHA became a haven for creativity and collaboration, offering assistance to over 300 businesses and accommodating more than 2500 creatives through workshops, hackathons, and creative events.
Isatu’s advice to fellow women in business echoes a sentiment of perseverance and collaboration, urging them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence. In a world where obstacles abound, she encourages women to embrace collaboration, eschew greed, and strive for mastery in their respective fields.
As she envisions the future, Isatu sees Creative Hub Africa as the epicenter of creativity and innovation in the Mano River Union, a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship and community collaboration. In a world where creativity knows no bounds, Isatu Harrison and Creative Hub Africa stand as a shining example of the indomitable spirit of female entrepreneurship, inspiring generations to come.
